Take a walk with us “Under the Canopy” of the forested Ivers / Bassett Preserves with Dr. Stephen “Mitch” Wagener, Climate Change Educator, Ecologist and Professor of Biology at Western Connecticut State University.
Focus of this educational walk:
We are newcomers here. Modern humans first appeared in Africa 250,000 years ago and have only lived in the Americas for the past 15,000 years or so. Since the invention of agriculture, we have had a profound effect on our environment. In New England this began with the arrival of the first Native Americans and continues to the present day. This presentation will broadly discuss—as we walk through the forest—the effects of humans on the environment since the end of the last ice age. We will focus on Connecticut, by way of three specific stories. One will be the role of humans in the extinction of large mammals (such as mammoths). Second, the construction and ecology of stone walls by European colonists. Third, the accidental importation by humans of organisms which become pests.
