We will hike about 8 miles with challenging uphill climbs of Roaring Brook gorge, and Mt. Sanford, for a total elevation gain of over 1,000′. Short walk from Lock 12 parking lot to Roaring Brook Park to begin hike. Ascend the Roaring Brook gorge along Roaring Brook Falls to the Quinnipiac (Q) Trail (442′). Proceed south on ridge along the Q. Trail, with short descents/ascents along the way, and a gradual descent to a highway crossing (Rt. 42) to Mt. Sanford Block of the Naugatuck State Forrest. Long ascent of Mt. Sanford (890′), with a lunch break at a lookout. With climbing completed, we will descend Mt. Sanford near Camp Laurel, and hike east through Naugatuck State Forest to Brooksvale Park, Hamden. From Brooksvale Park, we will return to our starting point northward along the Farmington Canal Trail.
Bring 2 liters (4×16 oz) of water and lunch/snacks. Meet at the parking lot for Lock 12 Park & Museum 487 N. Brooksvale Rd. (Rt.42), Cheshire at 10:00. Leashed dogs okay. Hike Leader Dennis Jakiela. Meet at the parking lot for Lock 12 Park & Museum at 487 N. Brooksvale Rd. (Rt.42), at 9:15 am for 9:30 start. Short walk to Roaring Brook trailhead. This is a loop hike. We will return to parking lot via Farmington Canal Trail.
