The Bolton Conservation Commission will host a 3-mile hike to the Box Mountain Old-Growth Forest with special guest Matt “Twig” Largess, a nationally recognized arborist. The 117-acre Box Mountain Forest was inducted recently into the Old Growth Forest Network thanks to landowners, Mark and Jamie Summers. This highlights proforestation of private lands and leaving forests intact without habitat manipulation which has become a crucial step as a climate change counter measure. Commission members will be on hand to help identify the diversity of trees along the way to an amazing stand of Dwarf Chestnut oak. From the view on Box Mountain near Sal’s Cave one can enjoy the view into the rare Bolton Notch/Valley Falls watershed. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended. Hikers will encounter some steep uphill and uneven terrain. No dogs please.
