Warren Land Trust’s 2025 Trails Day hike takes us to one of WLT’s newer properties: the Keith Family Preserve. This 73-acre gem, acquired in 2021 thanks to a generous bequest from Joyce Keith, sits on a wooded ridgeline that falls away on either side, with wetlands below and a lovely hemlock grove in and around the property’s high point. There are old stone walls, great rock formations and a large stand of mountain laurel on one side of the ridgeline that — fingers crossed — will be in bloom for Trails Day.
The hike will proceed up the main trail, following the ridgeline, and through 2 loop trails on either side of the main trail. The total distance is about 2 miles and, as you may have guessed by the repetition of the word ridgeline, there is definitely some up and down on this trail.
If it has rained recently, the lower part of the trail can be wet; choose appropriate footwear, please. And as this is NW CT, dress to avoid ticks. You bring your water bottle…we’ll provide plenty of our President’s famous — and delicious — Trail Blazer cookies. After all, hiking has been known to stimulate the appetite!
