Connecticut Trails Day 2026: Free Hiking & Outdoor Events Across CT
By Denise Henzen
Each year, people across the country celebrate National Trails Day®, a nationwide initiative organized by the American Hiking Society to encourage outdoor exploration, advocacy, and trail stewardship. While this national event takes place on the first Saturday in June, Connecticut has expanded Trails Day into something larger: a full weekend dedicated to discovering and enjoying the outdoors and the many hiking trails in Connecticut.
Connecticut Trails Day, organized by the Connecticut Forest & Park Association (CFPA), an affiliate partner of the American Hiking Society, transforms the state into a hub for outdoor recreation. CT Trails Day takes place annually on the first weekend in June and is the largest Trails Day celebration in the country. Expanding on the national event focusing primarily on trail service and advocacy, Connecticut Trails Day emphasizes accessibility, recreation, and fun. The goal is simple: help people get outside and inspire them to return to the trails long after Trails Day weekend ends.
Across the state, over 200 free, guided events are offered, including hikes, paddles, bike rides, and family-friendly nature walks. These events take place on some of the most scenic trails in CT, including CFPA’s Blue-Blazed Hiking Trails system, which spans more than 825 miles. Every Connecticut Trails Day event is guided by a leader.
National Trails Day itself has been celebrated for over 30 years and includes events in all 50 states, helping connect people with outdoor spaces, trail service, and conservation. Connecticut builds on that foundation by shifting the focus toward recreation and community-building. Rather than just maintaining trails, the emphasis is on experiencing them!
This Trails Day approach aligns with broader research on outdoor recreation. Spending time outdoors supports physical health, mental health, and social well-being, helping people build stronger connections to their communities and the environment.
For some participants, Connecticut Trails Day is their first introduction to hiking. Guided events help remove barriers by providing leadership, structure, and a sense of safety—especially for beginners who may not know where to start.
One of the most exciting aspects of Connecticut Trails Day is the variety of events that are available across the state! Whether you’re looking for a scenic walk, a challenging hike, or a fun group activity, there’s something for everyone. The diverse event options help ensure that Trails Day is inclusive and welcoming to individuals, families, and friend groups, some of whom may be trying hiking for the first time.
Participants can explore different landscapes without having to travel far. This allows participants to experience nature in a way that feels comfortable and engaging.
Another benefit of Connecticut Trails Day is the sense of community it fosters. The events create opportunities for conversation, connection, and learning. Trails Day participants often leave not only with a greater appreciation for Connecticut’s natural beauty but with new knowledge about plants, wildlife, and conservation efforts.
Connecticut Trails Day is more than just an event—it’s an invitation. It encourages people to explore local trails, discover new outdoor activities, and build habits that support both personal well-being and environmental appreciation. Each year, thousands of Connecticut residents get outside during Trails Day. If you’ve ever thought about getting outside but didn’t know where to begin, Trails Day is the perfect way to start.
