Tory’s Cave has been closed to human entry to protect hibernating bats, but we will have a close encounter with its moss-covered entry. You will learn about the cave’s legends dating back to the American Revolution and the history of this forested landscape. We will climb about 550 feet of elevation. The hike continues up Boardman Mountain through The Eleanor and Howard Hunt Nature Preserves and winds through a mix of deciduous hardwoods, birch, beech, white pines, and glacial erratics. Footing is not difficult but uneven. We will climb about 550 feet of elevation, but most of it is on the first half. This hike is located roughly in the center of the Housatonic Range Trail and is the only loop section. You will learn how to access other sections of the trail for future explorations on your own. - [Through The Woods And Along The Dike](https://trailsday.org/events/trough-the-woods-and-along-the-dike/) - This hike will be 2.2 miles and will not have any long or steep hills but will have sections that have raised rocks and roots. We will be hiking trails protected and maintained by Joshua’s Trust. We will pick up the blue trail and take it to the yellow trail. The hike will be just over 2 miles but we are listing it as difficult because there is uneven terrain, a stream crossing, steep grades and parts of the trail are narrow. That being said, there will be remnants of a time past in the form of stone walls and old farm roads as well as interesting flora and hopefully fauna as we hike this old farm turned woodland habitat. - [Thames River Heritage Park "Quest" Scavenger Hunts](https://trailsday.org/events/thames-river-heritage-park-quest-scavenger-hunts/) - CT Trails Day, sponsored by the Connecticut Forest & Park Association, is right around the corner! The hike will take us up the ridge before connecting to Penwood State Park, and ascending to the peak of the Talcott Ridge. This hike includes moderate elevation change, long uphill sections, and is apt to be wet and muddy in some areas. Milder sections traverse woodlands and open meadows before passing over boardwalks spanning vernal pools and wetlands. The hike is approximately 4 miles (round trip) and will take about 2 hours to complete. There is a parking area available and on street parking nearby. This guided walk brings together community members, community organizations, planners, and urban trail enthusiasts to experience existing and potential trail routes firsthand and identify opportunities to better link our green spaces. As we walk, we’ll observe and discuss existing conditions, including trail accessibility, safety, signage, trail history and overall user experience. Participants will share ideas for improving connectivity between key park destinations. We’ll also incorporate light trail cleanup along the route—such as picking up litter or clearing small debris—so we can leave the spaces we visit a little better than we found them. This event is both exploratory and collaborative—designed to spark conversation, gather insights, and build momentum toward a more connected urban trail system. Whether you’re a casual walker, cyclist, advocate, or simply curious about the future of Hartford’s outdoor spaces, your perspective is valuable. Come be part of the effort to reimagine how we move through and connect with our city’s parks—one step at a time. - [Steep Rock Preserve History Hike - Holiday House Ruins And The Shepaug Railroad Tunnel](https://trailsday.org/events/steep-rock-preserve-history-hike-holiday-house-ruins-and-the-shepaug-railroad-tunnel/) - This is an easy 4.2-mile hike. The first ¾ of a mile consists of 140 ft of gradual elevation change both uphill and downhill. The remaining 3.5 miles follows Tunnel Road and the historic Shepaug Railroad bed, both of which are predominantly flat. Starting at the Steep Rock Preserve main parking lot, the route takes hikers up a small incline to the Holiday House ruins. Descending back down to Tunnel Rd, hikers walk along the Shepaug River getting glimpses of ducks, great blue herons, and other animals that call the river home. Hikers will then traverse along the old railroad bed which leads directly to the 180-ft long train tunnel that was carved through bedrock over 150 years ago. Hikers will then use a short connecting trail to get back onto Tunnel Road for the hike back to their cars. Dress for hiking: we recommend sturdy shoes, water, and a small snack. Bug spray and sunscreen should be applied ahead of time. Well behaved dogs on leash are welcome. - [Southbury Rochambeau Traverse](https://trailsday.org/events/southbury-rochambeau-traverse/) - Southbury Rochambeau Traverse – The Southbury Land Trust in cooperation with the Southbury America 250th Commission is planning a walk/traverse of the Town of Southbury, starting near the Woodbury town line and trekking across Southbury all the way to the Housatonic River crossing with bordering Newtown. The walk is to commemorate the trip that Cmte de Rochambeau and his 5000 French troops took during the American Revolution nearly 250 years ago. The planned traverse is a one-way 6-mile adventure but can be curtailed at 1.4 miles and 3.8 miles for those that choose to do so. It will include several stops along the way with short history talks. Busing/transportation for a return to the parking area will be provided from the three possible ending spots. The hike is just two miles total round trip, but we’ll take our time and stop for salamanders, frogs, and the large rock formation known as the council caves. Hike leaders Chris and Arman will be happy to share nets to catch newts. It’s an easily hike with little change in elevation. Kids ages 3+ should have no trouble. Some sections can be muddy if it’s wet the week prior. It’s important for parents to closely supervise children — particularly important when we reach the caves where it would be easy for unattended children to slip and fall. (FYI the caves are not actually caves but rather large rocks that require reasonably good agility and fitness to climb.) The caves are a nice spot to stop for a snack, so please feel free to pack snacks. Water, sunscreen, and insect repellent are recommended. Please note that the likes of repellent and sunscreen are easily absorbed through amphibians’ skin and can be harmful to them. In the seventeenth century, English fugitives who sentenced King Charles I to death took refuge in the impressive traprock formation known today as Judges Cave. They were sheltered there by their Puritan sympathizers in New Haven. How did they survive? And how did the bloody controversy in which they took part lay the basis for the American system of government and the American Constitution? Likewise, how did the fugitives and their compatriots interact with the native peoples of the region? And who were those Algonquin-speaking peoples, and what were their societies like? The tour begins with a panoramic view of New Haven and the Mill River Valley, setting our scene. It then continues on a largely level yet rocky 0.6 path to Judges Cave. After we admire the cave together—with historical documents!—participants may either return to their vehicles parked at the South Overlook or continue northward on their own down the blue-blazed trail. The Regicides Trail soon joins the Quinnipiac Trail, which was the first trail in the state’s blue-blazed trail system, so we’ll also take the opportunity at Judges Cave to contemplate the exciting history and variety of this jewel of Connecticut. Participants in wheelchairs are warmly invited to join us at the South Overlook parking lot and at the parking area directly in front of the cave, but the trail is rocky and not suitable for wheelchairs. - [A Multisensational Nature Adventure](https://trailsday.org/events/a-multisensational-nature-adventure/) - For information about accessibility, including communication access and assistance registering, go to avalonia.org or contact us at avalonialc@yahoo.com or 860-884-3500. We’ll hike Knox’s gentle trails—and even a historic graveyard—at a slow pace designed to enable everyone to use all of their senses on a journey of environmental discovery, co-sponsored with the South East Connecticut Community Center of the Blind, to experience, as fully as possible, the delights of nature. The walk will be amplified. This includes expanses of inland marshland and both calm and babbling river. You will have the opportunity to cross the river on a suspended (swinging) bridge, see the work of beaver and other wildlife. You will have your choice between 2 hikes, all starting at the Pinney Fields on Pinney Street in Ellington. Parking is available in the lot on Pinney Street and the hike will start from the parking lot. The first would be an “out and back“ hike of approximately 2 miles from Pinney Fields going to and across the suspended Bridge in Vernon and back to Pinney Fields. The second would be an “out and back” hike of about 5 miles from Pinney Fields to the Dart Hill North parking area on Dart Hill Rd. in Vernon and back. “Porta-potties” will be available at Pinney Fields, and Dart Hill North parking area. Most of the trail in the first hike is considered easy with gravel or paved trail surface. But there are roots and other minor obstacles. The second hike is an extension of the first, but includes a trail between Rt 74 and Dart Hill Rd. in Vernon and should be considered moderate. There are a fair amount of tree roots to watch for, some minor up and down hill areas and some spots may be wet, but you will be rewarded with abundant views of the Hockanum River and all it has to offer. Hiking shoes or boots are recommended for that portion of the trail For more information about the Hockanum River Park Linear trail and a video on the construction of the David Smith suspension bridge go to Hockanum River Linear Park Trail | Town Of Vernon. - [Gillette Castle Train Trail Hike Saturday AM](https://trailsday.org/events/gillette-castle-train-trail-hike-saturday-am/) - The Friends of Gillette Castle State Park are hosting a guided hike on the route followed by William Gillette’s narrow-gauge train.
