Meet Donald Grant Mitchell who first planned New Haven’s park system, see his watercolor maps of the West River and West Rock. Walk to Valley St., through the New Haven Garden of Healing, take the footbridge across the river into Amrhyn Field, walk between the river and West Rock ridge, cross Valley St. onto the West River Greenway Open Space trail. Follow this trail crossing the river once more on a new 2023 footbridge. The serene, river woodland trail is nestled between busy Whalley Ave. and Valley St. Between the 18th and 20th centuries it was a busy manufacturing site: paper mills, matches & baskets, grist mills, textile dyeing and printing. You can see some remains. The trail ends at E. Ramsdell St. Return to starting point by the trail or via Valley St.
